Namibia’s Choral Scene: Q&A with Roger Nautoro

If you love music, get ready to be inspired!

The Blended Voices Choral Competition is back at the National Theatre of Namibia (NTN), and it’s more than just a competition, it’s a celebration of creativity, collaboration, and Namibian talent.

We sat down with Roger Nautoro, the head judge, to find out what makes this competition so special and why you won’t want to miss it.

Please tell us about your background in the Blended Voices Choral Competition project.

RN: I was invited to be part of the Blended Voices Choral Competition through a recommendation by the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture, together with the Erongo Regional Council as strategic partners. This opportunity allows me to share my experience in choral development, adjudication, and training, while contributing to the growth and professionalization of Namibia’s choral sector.

What makes the Blended Voices Choral Competition unique?

RN: What makes this competition truly special is that it goes beyond performance. While the increased prize money is a great motivator, the real value lies in its developmental approach. Conductors and selected choristers are given the opportunity to participate in workshops covering music theory, conducting, and adjudication. It is not just about competing, it is about learning, growing, and building a stronger choral community.

Your vision for emerging Namibian composers?

RN: My vision is to see more Namibian composers confidently creating and owning their musical narratives. Since the release of Namibian Repertoire 1 and 2 in 2012, we have seen a powerful shift towards local composition. I would like to see this continue to grow, with composers writing across different styles and even contributing to school anthems and national works. Composition must also be respected as a profession, with proper recognition and compensation.

Your advice on the commercialisation of choirs?

RN: Choirs need to start positioning themselves as part of the creative economy. This means moving beyond traditional performances and becoming self sustainable through concerts, collaborations, and professional services. Conductors and composers must be fairly compensated for their work. Passion is important, but sustainability ensures longevity. Even the best choir cannot sing its way to a performance without transport.

Your experience from the recent workshop and key gaps?

RN: The workshop was highly successful, with strong participation and enthusiasm from conductors and choristers. However, a major gap remains in music literacy. Many rely on recordings instead of reading sheet music, which limits growth and repertoire. Strengthening skills in music theory and sight reading will be key to unlocking the full potential of our choirs.

Why should the public attend the competition?

RN: This year’s competition promises an exciting blend of tradition and innovation. Audiences can expect choral arrangements of contemporary Namibian music, vibrant choreography, and outstanding performances. With last year’s champions returning as guest performers, it will truly be a celebration of choral excellence. It is not just a show, it is an experience.

Where do you see the choral sector in the next 5 to 10 years?

RN: The future is very promising. I see increased collaboration between choirs, bands, and orchestras, creating richer musical experiences. To get there, we need strong support from both government and the private sector. With the right investment, Namibia can become a leading force in choral music. The talent is already there, it just needs to be fully supported.
