Namibian Cast Ermelinda Thataone, Patricia Ochorus & Sevelia Nanghama Directected by Keamogetsi joseph Molapong Wathint' Abafazi Wathint' Imbokodo (You Strike A Woman, You Strike A Rock) was originally workshopped by Phyllis Klotz, with Nomvula Qosha, Thobeka Maqutyana and Poppy Tsira and Busi Zolufa . The play was first performed in 1986 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the march on the Union Buildings by about 20 000 women to protest against the notorious pass laws in South Africa. We meet the rather old-fashioned, play-it-safe conformist, Mampompo. She doesn't want to rock the political boat, even when much of her misery arises from the apartheid laws which determine the daily course of her life. Sdudla is defiant. She sees through and recognises the layers of oppression which she as a black woman has to battle. Then there is the sparkling and crafty Mamphele, who derives enjoyment out of her defiance, not only of the political set-up, but of the traditionalist modes that oppress her as a woman, and which are voiced by Mampompo. The play represents classic “protest theatre” of the 80’s. The vibrant performances, using minimal sets and costumes, take us on a humorous, sad and poignant journey to the bad days of the apartheid era. 24 years later, in 2010, many of the issues that were relevant to these feisty street hawkers still ring true for women in a post-independent Namibia.
