Nangula’s son
The National Theatre of Namibia is proud to present the theatre play “Nangula’s Son” as part of its three Premier productions for 2009. Nangula’s Son will be staged at the National Theatre on 18-20 June at 19h00 for 20h00. Advance tickets of N$40 are available at the NTN Box Office or alternatively at the door at a price of N$50.
The play is set in northern Namibia at the height of the war between SWAPO’s armed wing, PLAN and the South African occupational forces.
On this particular day, after another exchange of fire-power between PLAN and SADF, a dazed and confused young white soldier wanders into Nangula and her mother’s homestead.
While Nangula’s mother, Me Mukwaudimbe wishes that the boy wake out of his dazed state and then leave before either the South African troops return or before he is discovered by PLAN, Nangula decides on the unthinkable – she decides she is adopting the young soldier who does nothing else but blankly stare the whole day.
The drama then unfolds in Nangula’s homestead, as nosy neighbours want to know if it is true or not that a Nangula is hiding a young white enemy soldier that she had decided to adopt as the son she could not have with the love of her life who had left to join the struggle.
How long will it take before “Ndishishi”, as Nangula has decided to call her newly acquired son, is discovered. And will “Ndishishi” wake from his daze.. and how will he react should he come to and realise that he is being held hostage by two ‘kaffir women’?
But all that compares nothing to what is certain to happen not only to the white boy, but also to Nangula should Kakulumbwati, the no-nonsense PLAN Commander find out Nangula’s gross betrayal of the cause – Nangula would surely have her throat slit from ear to ear.
The audience will be at the edge of their seats as the plot thickens in this suspense thriller adapted and directed by award winning stage and film director, Vickson Hangula.
The play is originally written by the late Dieter K. Friedrich, for which he had also received the Golden Pen Playwrights’ Award four years ago.
The play features an ensample cast of both seasoned actors such as Panduleni Hailundu, Morne Botha and Mike Nghipunya, and the up and coming actresses such as Inyemba Kamwi, Selma Alfeus and absolute beginners Elizabeth Ashipala and the youthful Riiamekee Veii.
This play is sponsored by the French Mission for Co-operation and the Bank Windhoek Arts Festival.
