YOU’RE NOT ALONE - EXCITING NEW DANCE SHOW BY OYO AT THE NATIONAL THEATRE OF NAMIBIA FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY (23 APRIL 2010) BEFORE ITS TOUR TO CAPE TOWN! OYO (Ombetja Yehinga Organisation Trust) had the great honour to receive an invitation from VSO RAISA to perform during a conference organised for parliamentarians from SADC. On 29 April its dance troupe will present its show in Cape Town on a magnificent boat, the Clipper, to representatives from various SADC countries during an exclusive evening. Prior to depart for South Africa, OYO will present its show at the National Theatre of Namibia on 23 April 2010. The OYO dance troupe, constituted in 2008 and comprising 10 talented young Namibians (Zito da Cunha, Estomine Haradoes, Norman Kapunda, Mercy Khaises, Dennis Kharuchab, Nyandee Mbarandongo, Daniel Ndume, El Juanita Philander, Paulina Tjiatana and West Uarije), presented shows at the National Theatre of Namibia (The Namibian Odysseus, July 2008, Fallen Masks, July 2009), at the FNCC (Together, December 2009), in Germany (in collaboration with p.art.ners) and in the UK (upon invitation by world leading contemporary dance theatre Sadler’s Wells). For the Clipper event, OYO is delighted to collaborate with renowned Zimbabwean Artist Leonard Zhakata. Leonard’s 1994 smash hit Mugove, from the album Maruva Enyika propelled him to national stardom. In 1994 at age 26, he became the youngest Zimbabwean musician to sell more than 100,000 copies of an album, when his solo album Maruva Enyika sold more than 120,000 copies. Three contemporary pieces choreographed by French-born, Namibian-based OYO’s director, Philippe TalaveraH will be presented at the National Theatre of Namibia: · Whose fault is it? follows the journey of a young girl who has to face responsibilities she cannot handle alone at a young age. · I’m not alone, using the music of Leonard Zhakata and featuring his life performance at the NTN. This piece looks at the issue of stigma and discrimination and care and support. Women and girls are often left alone caring for people living with HIV. However, with only limited means, and at times infected themselves, the burden can quickly become too much. Only once the whole community stands up and fight together, only once we are not alone anymore, can a difference be made. · Colour blind, a very physical piece reflecting on xenophobia, racism and tribalism in modern Namibia. You’re not alone will be staged at the NTN for one night only on Friday 23 April 2010 at 20h00. This will be Leonard Zhakata first life performance in Namibia! This is therefore a show not to be missed. For tickets enquiry contact Jackie or Evelina at 061-254915. Show free of charge for learners and students. OYO would like to take this opportunity to thank the City of Windhoek, in particular its community development department, for providing us with the rehearsals space; VSO RAISA for the great honour to perform in Cape Town; and the Franco Namibian Cultural Centre (FNCC) for supporting this initiative.
